Paddy a whippet visited the Tyldesley surgery with a lump on his side. After drawing some cells out of the lump with a needle a decision was made to take a biopsy of the lump and send it off for further testing. Paddy was booked in a few days later to have the lump biopsied and sent to a canine pathologist to have a more detailed evaluation of the lump carried out. The results of the lump showed it was spindle cell sarcoma, so Paddy would need extensive surgery to remove the lump and the area around the lump. Paddy had a very complex surgery with an axial flap, An axial pattern flap is a pedicle graft that incorporates a direct cutaneous artery and vein into its base. Paddy also had a drain placed into the wound to allow drainage. Due to the size of the surgical wound there was a large risk of post operative complications such as the flap not taking and dying, the stitches being traumatised or coming loose and infection. Paddy's owners have done an amazing job of looking after Paddy and the wound. Paddy is still on the road to recovery a month later and is doing well and the wound had nearly healed.
